Today the Hey June Edelweiss pattern tour express is making a stop at Miss Matatabi. Welcome!
The Edelweiss dress is the newest pattern by Adrianna from Hey June and Crafterhours and not only is the pattern name perfect, the Edelweiss dress is a whole heap of adorable.
I was thrilled when Adrianna asked me to be part of her pattern tour. I had the chance to test her Narita dress pattern last winter and loved sewing both dresses. I have yet to blog about the Narita dress because I’ve been having a hard time getting A to hand it over. It has become her favourite and preferred item of clothing to wear to bed actually. Regular pajamas just don’t cut it anymore. Sleepwear must be “beautiful and round-and-round”, yo.
Well I’m pleased to say the Edelweiss dress is also beautiful and round-and-round plus – ruffles! A loves it as much as the Narita and spent the afternoon outside dancing in it so thumbs up all round.
If you have been following the blog tour you will have noticed all the other amazing versions of this dress. There are so many ways to customise this but I decided to keep it simple and go with one print and, because I like to live on the edge, make the Edelweiss in this knit fabric.
Before I go on I think I should say a couple of things about the fabric. Yep, I too think it is amazing but unfortunately it isn’t a fabric I have in the shop. I’m sorry. I hesitated to use it because I was sure someone would ask me about it but it has been in my stash for a while and was just calling out to be made into the Edelweiss. Curse me for a moment if you will and then let’s make up, ok?
Adrianna recommends measuring your child’s chest to figure out the best size to make and I did that. She measured as a size 2 so I went and made a size 3. No, I don’t know why either. When a pattern designer tells you to do something don’t be a rebel, just listen to the lady. So this one is a bit big but no worries, plenty of room to grow!
The suggested fabrics for the Edelweiss dress include sturdy knits and this one does not have much stretch so it was great to sew with. The bodice is lined with a woven cotton so it isn’t necessary to go down a size which is sometimes recommended when sewing with knits. The ruffle straps here are finished with a zigzag stitch and the hem is unfinished. I don’t think there will be too much fraying or curling at the hem so I may leave it like that. The bodice closes at the back with buttons but I wasn’t able to find the perfect ones before I took photos so I used a felt squirrel brooch instead. I kinda like how it looks so maybe squirrel will stay.
The Edelweiss pattern can be made in either tunic or dress length, in sizes from 18 months to size 10, and is available for purchase in the Hey June shop here. Adrianna’s patterns are really well-written and come with clear instructions and diagrams too. Now go get that Edelweiss pattern, get into your Lederhosen and start sewing!
Thank you for having me, Adrianna!
I received a copy of the pattern as part of this tour but all opinions are my own. xo
